1. How do you define your legal practice and typical clients?
I would define my practice as a securities law practice with a focus on broker-dealer regulation. My typical clients are broker-dealers, investment advisers and their associated persons and any other entity or individual that needs expert advice regarding securities law.
2. Tell us about your legal career journey. What made you become a lawyer and how did you land at Practus?
I believe the primary reason I became a lawyer was because my father is a lawyer. I was fortunate enough to work in his law office growing up and got an upfront view of what a lawyer does. I knew about Practus from a former FINRA colleague who had been with Practus for several years. I subsequently responded to a LinkedIn post from Practus seeking financial services attorneys.
3. What about the Practus model serves you as a legal professional, and as a person?
The flexibility of the Practus model is what serves me best as both a legal professional, and as a person. It gives me the opportunity to choose the types of matters I want to work on, as well as when I want to work on them. Also having the support of the Practus infrastructure, particularly the accounting and marketing services, is very beneficial.
4. What is the one thing you wish people about to hire a lawyer with your expertise knew?
I would say that while many situations look straight forward on their face, when you start to dig into the details, there are nuances that only experienced counsel can help you with.
5. Sometimes our best quality is also the one that gets us in tough situations. Tell us about your best quality and how it has mostly worked for you, except that one time …
I can’t recall a specific example, but there have been times where I become so focused on a particular task or issue that I sometimes forget the big picture, which may not serve a client well. I have gotten better at stepping back and reevaluating periodically to make sure that what I’m doing is the best course of action for my client.
6. When you’re not working at Practus, what’s keeping you busy? Any cool hobbies or hidden talents we don’t know about?
When I’m not working at Practus, I enjoy spending time with family and friends and playing golf. Otherwise, I’m pretty boring with no cool hobbies or hidden talents.
7. What fictional lawyer do you most relate to? Who is your alter ego?
My wife and I have been watching The Lincoln Lawyer series recently, so I would say Mickey Haller.
Editor: Does that mean you drive a Lincoln?
Ha! I hadn’t thought about that, but the irony is I have a Cadillac!
Editor: So you’re a Cadillac lawyer.
You could say that!
BONUS QUESTION: What would you do if you weren’t an attorney?
If I wasn’t a lawyer, I would probably be involved in the golf industry.
