Setting the Course: How Practus Was Built Differently

Authored by John H. Lively

For eight years, Practus LLP has helped attorneys and clients navigate an evolving legal landscape: one shaped by shifting expectations, rapid technological change, and a growing demand for smarter, more flexible legal solutions.

This anniversary marks more than just another year in business. It’s a moment to reflect on how we got here and why the foundation we built was designed not just to last, but to endure.

In this 8th anniversary series, we’re embracing the theme of Forged to Endure, drawing inspiration from bronze—the traditional anniversary gift to celebrate eight years together.

Bronze is not a single element, but a blend. It’s stronger together than each of its individual elements. It can be molded into complex shapes, stand up to challenging environments like the ocean, and last the test of time. It’s why bronze is still the go-to material in the marine industry. It’s more resilient because of how it’s forged.

That idea sits at the core of Practus.

Our firm wasn’t built by accident. We intentionally took those individual elements that bring out the best of the practice of law and brought them together to create a modern law firm that’s built to last. It all started by setting the course towards a new horizon of law.

Chasing the Horizon, Not the Status Quo

The coordinates for Practus were plotted long before our official launch eight years ago. Back in 2009, our founders, John Lively and Bob Elwood, realized that the traditional law map was leading talented attorneys toward burnout and clients toward inflated invoices. The old model with its heavy associate pyramids, grueling commutes, and rigid office politics felt like an anchor dragging behind a modern profession.

So, we set a different course. In 2018, sixteen innovative legal professionals set out to build a modern, distributed law firm. Practus was never a “virtual law” experiment. Our firm was a deliberate architecture forged with endurance, flexibility, and autonomy.

Now, with over 70 attorneys and 30 non-attorney professionals, we’re seeing how important it was to plot our own course instead of chasing the status quo. Let’s dive into how we transformed from a team of 16 to over 100 in these last eight years.

Different by Design: The Elements of Our Alloy

The strength of bronze comes from its composition. On its own, each element serves a purpose. When forged together, these elements create something more resilient and better equipped to endure.

The same is true for Practus.

From the beginning, the firm was built by bringing together a specific set of elements—each intentionally chosen to support both attorneys and clients in a modern legal environment. Some of those elements include:

  • A Partner-Led Structure

At Practus, we moved away from the traditional associate pyramid in favor of a partner-led model

That shift changes the experience on both sides of the table. Clients work directly with experienced attorneys who are deeply engaged in their matters instead of navigating layers of delegation. This structure empowers attorneys to focus on delivering high-quality legal work without the pressure of managing a hierarchical team structure.

It’s a model that prioritizes depth of experience over volume, and alignment over leverage.

  • The Power of Community

A modern law firm model can sometimes be mistaken for independence without connection. At Practus, the opposite is true.

Our firm was built to be highly collaborative. Attorneys work across practice areas, industries, and jurisdictions, bringing together the combination of experience needed for each client matter.

As legal work becomes more complex, that level of connectivity becomes essential. It allows for thoughtful strategy, comprehensive solutions, and a shared standard of excellence across the firm.

Today, Practus reflects a shift away from the idea of the solo attorney operating independently, and toward something more powerful:

A connected, partner-level network where 1 + 1 doesn’t equal 2—it equals 10

That strength in numbers is forged through shared standards, aligned incentives, and a culture built around mutual respect and collaboration.

  • Modern Infrastructure

Seamless collaboration across jurisdictions and practice areas is only possible with the technology behind what makes a modern firm…well… modern.

By investing in thoughtfully selected technology and systems, Practus removes much of the administrative friction that can slow down traditional firms. The goal isn’t to replace the role of the attorney with tech but to support it, making it easier to communicate, respond, and adapt as clients’ needs evolve.

This tech-forward way of working is what clients demand, and it’s why modern law firms are positioned to endure even the strongest of changing tides.

Built for Changing Tides

Over the past eight years, the legal industry has faced significant change—from evolving client expectations to the rapid acceleration of legal technology and AI.

Firms that rely on rigid structures have struggled to adapt. But mid-sized, tech-enabled, and distributed firms are uniquely positioned to thrive. With less overhead, more agility, and a willingness to adopt best-of-breed solutions, firms like ours can respond quickly to a changing environment without sacrificing quality or consistency.

Setting the Course Forward

Eight years in, the foundation is firmly established. Practus was built differently with intention and strategy, creating a long-term view of where the legal industry is heading.

What started as an alternative to traditional law firm structures has become a modern, distributed model forged to adapt, evolve, and endure.

And this is only the beginning.

As the tides continue to shift, the next chapter of Practus won’t just be about where we’ve been—but where we’re headed next. Throughout this anniversary series, we’ll be charting that course, sharing how our model continues to evolve to meet the demands of a changing legal landscape.

Because if the first eight years were about building the vessel, the next chapter is about how far it can go.

Thank you for being part of the journey. It’s because of this community of attorneys, clients, and partners that Practus stands stronger than ever. Eight years in, and what we built to endure is now built to define what’s next.
