July is Columbo’s 6-year Adoptiversary by Andrea Shaw
Andrea Shaw had no intention of bringing home another dog when she was in Columbus, Georgia on business back in July of 2018. But she also didn’t intend to meet a group of cyclists trying to figure out what to do with a thin, hurting stray they found while mountain biking. One of the riders rode seven miles into town with the injured dog on his back. They were still trying to figure out what to do with him when they met Andrea. The dog cuddled up against her and the Maine attorney immediately adopted him.
I’m saving this dog
Andrea called her husband saying, “Bad news. Broken dog, death sentence. Not on my watch. I’m saving this dog.” Her husband asked if her hotel was pet friendly, and the Adventures of Columbo began.
The Adventures of Columbo
First, she got him much needed medical care. His back leg and front toe were broken. The fracture to his leg required four pins and 25 staples. Doctors had to fully cast his front leg to stabilize the broken toe. Then she worked with an organization to get the newly named “Columbo” back to her horse farm in Maine. Meanwhile, the picture of Columbo riding on the back of the cyclist went viral and people were clamoring to hear about his fate.
A home, a cause, and help for other rescues
Andrea started a Facebook page called the Adventures of Columbo to keep fans, aka Bo’s peeps or Beeps, up to date on his new life, spread awareness, and raise money for other dogs in need. Bo and his 27K Beeps have raised thousands of dollars over the last six years to help homeless dogs with their medical care through the Columbo Fund. He’s also done newspaper interviews, appeared on national news, and shared his tail on Rachel Ray’s show. Good boy.
